Advent calendar 2026: how to choose and when to buy

When to buy, how to choose by age and interests and what to check before buying an advent calendar for the 2026 season.

An advent calendar is one of the few gifts whose value depends on the date. Bought in November it gives twenty-four days of anticipation, bought on 10 December only fourteen, and ten doors have to be opened at once. This guide covers everything worth knowing before you choose: when to buy, how to pick by age and interests, how chocolate and toy calendars differ, and how to get the price right.

When to buy an advent calendar

The short answer: in November. Advent starts on 29 November in 2026, and the first door of the calendar opens on 1 December. All the dates are in our article on when Advent starts in 2026.

Three things happen during the season, and none of them works in the buyer's favour:

  • The most popular models sell out first. This is not a marketing trick: manufacturers make calendars in limited batches for one season. LEGO, Kinder and beauty calendars often sell out in November.
  • Delivery slows down. Before December, courier services are at peak load, so a parcel can take longer than usual.
  • The calendar loses its point. Bought on 5 December, a child opens five doors in one go, and the ritual of waiting, which is why people buy a calendar, never happens.

Calendar by buying time

  • First half of November. The best time: full choice, calm delivery, and the calendar arrives with time to spare.
  • End of November. Still fine, but the most popular models may be gone. Choose from what is available rather than waiting for a specific one.
  • Early December. The calendar will arrive a few days late. Fine if the first doors don't matter much to you.
  • Later. Then it is better to pick a calendar whose doors are fun to open several at a time, such as snack or sweets calendars.

How to choose by age

The most common mistake when choosing a calendar for a child is buying what looks nicer on the box instead of what the child will actually do for twenty-four mornings in a row. For more ideas, see our article on the advent calendar for kids.

Under 3

At this age waiting is not yet understood, and small parts and hard chocolate are not suitable. If you want a calendar, choose one whose contents an adult hands to the child, rather than the child taking them out alone.

3-6 years

The best age for a calendar. The child understands the ritual and looks forward to it, but is not yet picky about the contents. Both chocolate and toy calendars work. When choosing a toy calendar, check the age recommended by the manufacturer: small parts are dangerous for children under three.

6-10 years

The age when kids start comparing their calendar with their friends'. Known characters and series work here: a set that turns into one big toy after twenty-four days beats twenty-four separate sweets.

10+ and adults

For children over ten and adults, quality matters more than quantity. Instead of twenty-four ordinary sweets, twenty-four good ones: a tea or coffee calendar, marzipan, pralines. For an adult, a calendar is often not about surprise but about a morning ritual over coffee.

A calendar for a woman or a man

Women are most often given a beauty, skincare, tea or chocolate calendar, men a tool, snack or collectible model calendar. We cover this in separate articles: advent calendar for women and advent calendar for men.

Chocolate or toys

Both types have their own logic, and the choice usually depends not on the child but on family habits.

  Chocolate Toys
What is left after the season Nothing Toys the child keeps playing with
Best for The whole family, sharing One child
Downside Twenty-four days of sweets Often small parts

A practical tip: with several children in the family, one chocolate calendar won't work, because a single door can't be shared. Either one each, or one larger toy calendar with shared contents.

How much does an advent calendar cost

The price range is wide, and it almost always reflects the contents, not the packaging.

  • The cheapest: simple chocolate calendars and tea sets. The contents are simple, but the ritual works just the same.
  • Mid-range: most of the market, chocolate from well-known brands, LEGO and other toy calendars, quality sweets.
  • The most expensive: beauty, tool and collectible calendars. Here you pay for what is left after 24 December.

What to check before buying

  1. Best-before date. Food calendars should be good at least until January.
  2. Ingredients and allergens. If you are buying for a child whose family habits you don't know, a toy calendar is safer: nuts and milk are almost unavoidable in chocolate calendars.
  3. Recommended age. With toy calendars this is not a formality: the parts can be dangerously small for children under three.
  4. Does it stand. Some calendars hang, some stand on a table, others are a flat box. If you want it to stand in the living room all December, check in advance.
  5. Number of doors. Most have 24, but some have 12 or 25. With 12 doors the ritual is half as long.

We deliver to parcel lockers or by DPD courier, usually within 3-5 working days, and delivery is free from 99 € in Lithuania and Latvia.

Frequently asked questions

When do you start opening an advent calendar?

On 1 December. The church season of Advent starts on 29 November in 2026, but calendars are always numbered from 1 to 24 December.

Is an advent calendar a good gift for an adult?

Yes, it is one of the fastest growing categories. Calendars with cosmetics, tea, coffee, tools or good chocolate work as a daily ritual for adults, not as a childish surprise.

What if the calendar arrives after 1 December?

The simplest option is to open the missed doors straight away and carry on as usual. With small children you can start from door one and finish a few days later, without sticking to the dates.

Can an advent calendar be the main gift?

It can, but it runs until 24 December. If you give gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the calendar will already be over, so it is best handed over before 1 December.

In short

Buy in November, choose by what the person will actually do with the contents, and check the best-before date and allergens. Everything else is a matter of taste. All calendars are in the catalogue, and the ones for kids are here.
